In EDH, you have to build around a color identity and it has to be a singleton (1 copy per card) Highlander (100 cards). I'll link useful pages and decklists you can use to follow along below. I would personally recommend EDH, because Modern is stupid expensive to be competitive, but deck building is a bit more complex in EDH. In commander artifact based decks are a bit different because of the Singleton nature of edh. From what I know, modern affinity isn't very high on the tier list due to certain bans that hurt the deck. However in modern the artifact lands are banned, so affinity in modern had to use other artifacts and other artifact synergies to do similar powerful things.
